1.   Understand Hazardous Zone Classification

Gas and dust environments are classified into different zones based on the likelihood of the presence of explosive substances. Familiarising yourself with the relevant classification system used in your region is essential; as is conducting a risk assessment of the fire and explosion hazards in your working environment (see Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations 2002). Your lighting requirements and its protective features will largely be determined by this risk assessment.

Zone Classification 0: Explosive atmospheres are present continuously, for long periods or frequently. Equipment must be safe under normal operation, expected and rare malfunction

Zone Classification 1: Explosive atmospheres are likely to occur occasionally under normal operation. Equipment must be safe under normal operation, expected malfunction.

Zone Classification 2: Explosive atmospheres may occur under abnormal operation and persist for a short period only. Equipment must be safe under normal operation.

It is important to consider that the higher the probability of an explosive atmosphere occurring and persisting, the higher the integrity requirements of the equipment to be installed. It is equally important to bear in mind that this information should not be used to decide what equipment is suitable: specialist ATEX advice must always be taken before making such decisions.
