How to Select the Right Lighting for Zone Gas and Dust Environments

Any professional team will be aware that creating a safe and well-illuminated work environment is crucial. This is especially true in areas where gas and dust hazards are present, where properly-selected lighting plays a vital role in ensuring visibility, productivity and – most importantly – the health and safety of workers.

Depending on the nature and hazardous zone classification of your working environment, choosing the ideal lighting solutions can be a challenge. In the latest blog from SA Equip, we’re simplifying that decision-making process with advice on how to select the right lighting for zone gas and dust environments; including product recommendations and more.

1.   Understand Hazardous Zone Classification

Gas and dust environments are classified into different zones based on the likelihood of the presence of explosive substances. Familiarising yourself with the relevant classification system used in your region is essential; as is conducting a risk assessment of the fire and explosion hazards in your working environment (see Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations 2002). Your lighting requirements and its protective features will largely be determined by this risk assessment.

Below, we’ve included some information (for guidance only) which includes broad definitions of zones.

Zone Classification 0: Explosive atmospheres are present continuously, for long periods or frequently. Equipment must be safe under normal operation, expected and rare malfunction

Zone Classification 1: Explosive atmospheres are likely to occur occasionally under normal operation. Equipment must be safe under normal operation, expected malfunction.

Zone Classification 2: Explosive atmospheres may occur under abnormal operation and persist for a short period only. Equipment must be safe under normal operation.

It is important to consider that the higher the probability of an explosive atmosphere occurring and persisting, the higher the integrity requirements of the equipment to be installed. It is equally important to bear in mind that this information should not be used to decide what equipment is suitable: specialist ATEX advice must always be taken before making such decisions.

For more guidance, SA Equip’s comprehensive brochure has been created to address many of the pain points customers will typically face when selecting the right lighting for zone gas and dust environments:

  • Certified products for each area: Regardless of your zone gas and dust certification, our brochure contains product listings that explicitly state what zone any given product is suitable for. Whether you need a torch that’s EX Certified for Zone 0 or a worklight that’s EX Certified for Zone 21, we’ve made that specification process easier than ever.
  • Guidance on zoned areas: Aside from listing products according to zone suitability, we’ve also created a visual guide (for guidance only) which explains how these classifications can relate to common hazardous area zones, such as commercial bulk storage tanks and petrol stations.
