A MUST-SEE DISTILLERY SAFETY RISK (AND HOW TO SOLVE IT)

A major safety issue found in the brewing and distilling industry – and its solution – presents a valuable case study for professionals working in any area where potentially explosive vapours are present.

The issue? When maintenance is carried out in a contained area where fumes are present this does not just create unsafe breathing conditions but can also mean the risk of vapours igniting with the potential for injuries and damage to stock.

Our quick read blog explains how these dangers can be addressed using the real-world example of roof maintenance in a whisky bonded warehouse.

Distillery Safety: The Challenge

A whisky distillery operator turned to portable safer working equipment specialists SA Equip for help as a raised platform installed to reduce asbestos from a warehouse roof had created a contained space.

The issue? Lack of ventilation and the presence of fumes from the barrels made this a hazardous working area.

SA Equip supplied plug-and-play equipment to address dangers created during the distillery’s maintenance work and also provided an overview of the precautions needed for working in this environment.

 DISTILLERY SAFETY: THE SOLUTION

The equipment, and advice, supplied helped the distillery to complete the maintenance work in two ways:

• A range of SA CYCLONE 40cm ATEX certified fans and anti-static ducting meant the easy to use, highly portable equipment could be quickly installed to create efficient airflow.

• The creation of increased airflow reduced the risk of an explosion, satisfying the risk assessment for working in the bonded warehouse.

Significantly, advisory work by SA Equip also helped risk awareness and contributed towards safety procedures in the distillery going forward.

Distillery Safety: Where to Find Products for Safer Working

The SA Equip SA CYCLONE range of portable ventilation equipment includes a heavy-duty Air Mover, couplers, adaptors, a choice of anti-static ducting and a high-performance Filtration Unit.

SA CYCLONE products are designed to plug-and-play, meaning a temporary ventilation system can be set up rapidly wherever required.

The range is already used by thousands of offshore workers, shipbuilders, utilities operatives, chemical maintenance crews and refurb teams around the world to keep them working safely, comfortably and effectively…whatever the conditions.
